Can't Fight The Cosmos / by Annie Mitchell

This past weekend Tom and I decided to take our chances with the Blood Wolf Moon and drive out to Alabama Hills, California to install our 3rd off-grid light sculpture (#leavenotrace).

After hiking around the area a bit we settled on installing at Mobius Arch. Even though it’s a busy tourist destination, we thought we could wait out the crowds and do some fast shots. As the moon rose and the crowds died away, I started to install and Tom started doing test shots at different angles. The more we tried, the more contrived it became and we were racing against the light of a full moon. It wasn’t clicking and the astrophotographers were starting to pop up.

It was high noon at 9PM. The light of the moon beat me to a final composition. Hyphae was packed away and we headed back to camp for dinner and drinks under the biggest sky I can remember seeing. So yeah, we drove 7 hours and camped in the desert in the shadow of Mount Whitney and all we have to show for it is some spectacular memories and the knowledge that you can’t fight the cosmos. I’ll take it.

You can see more of the Mobius Arch install here.
